Feeding guidance
Poultry are sensitive to sudden changes in feed, so hydroponic fodder should be introduced slowly. Offer a small amount alongside the usual commercial feed at first, and increase it step by step over several days while you watch the birds.
Layers can receive fodder as a fresh green addition to their normal ration. For broilers, wait until the starter phase is complete before offering it. Break the mat into small pieces so birds can peck at the shoots, seed, and roots easily.
Fodder does not replace a formulated poultry diet. Commercial feed still supplies the balance of energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins that the flock needs. Each farm's formulation is different, so ask your feed supplier or poultry nutritionist how fodder fits into yours.
Precautions
Watch feed intake, droppings, and general behaviour during the introduction period. If birds eat less of their main feed or droppings become loose, hold the amount steady or reduce it, and speak with your veterinarian if problems continue.
Only feed fresh fodder. Any batch that smells sour or shows mould should be discarded, not offered to the flock. Remove uneaten fodder from feeders and litter at the end of the day so it does not spoil in the house.
Keep drinkers and feeders clean, and make sure every bird can reach the fodder without crowding. Young or weak birds may be pushed aside when a new feed is offered.
Common questions
Can I feed fodder to chicks?
It is usually better to wait. Young chicks depend on a complete starter feed, and their digestive systems are still developing. Discuss the right timing with your poultry nutritionist before offering fodder to young birds.
Does fodder change egg quality?
Results vary between flocks, breeds, and diets, so no single outcome can be promised. Some farms offer fodder as a fresh green feed for layers; keep records for your own flock and review any changes with your nutritionist.
Which seed works best for poultry fodder?
Barley and wheat are common choices. Use clean, untreated seed from a reliable supplier, because seed treated for planting is not suitable for animal feed.
