Hydroponic fodder system technical overview

How a hydroponic fodder system runs, what it includes, what to send for a quote, and the main benefits to evaluate.

A hydroponic fodder system grows fresh green fodder from seed in trays on multi-tier racks, with irrigation, lighting and climate running automatically on a set cycle. A container system is self-contained: racks, trays, LED lighting, irrigation, ventilation and climate control are built in. Each system is quoted to the site, based on herd size or daily fodder requirement, power supply and delivery location.

Grow cycle

The system is designed around a 6–8 day germination window; the actual cycle depends on seed, environment and harvest standard. On day 1, seeds are soaked and placed in trays; during the following days, irrigation and climate run automatically. At the end of the cycle, the operator removes the trays and places new ones, which are the only manual steps.

System components

A container system includes multi-tier growing racks, food-grade trays, LED lighting, automated irrigation, ventilation and climate control, and is self-contained. On-site work is limited to positioning and utility connection. Tray material is customised to the buyer's requirement.

What to send for a quote

To prepare a quotation, send your herd size or daily fresh fodder requirement, preferred container size (20-foot or 40-foot), the power supply at the site and the delivery location. Tray material can be customised. No public capacity table is published; capacity is confirmed in the quotation.

Benefits

Hydroponic fodder is grown without soil in a controlled environment, so it can be produced year-round in a small footprint; how readily animals accept it varies and should be checked on site. Sprouting may improve the digestibility of some nutrients, depending on seed, cycle and conditions, but the gain in fresh weight is mainly water, so dry matter and actual nutrient content should be assessed. Irrigation water can be recirculated depending on the system design, and actual water use depends on equipment, climate and operation; the fodder is a supplement, not a complete feed.

Systems are quoted to herd size, power and site. No public price list or capacity table is published.
